Aaron Sturla: Independent Drawing Project

Independent Drawing Project

Project Description:
You will be required to draw a portrait from observation 5 times a week until the due date for this project; totaling in 25 portraits.

Goals:
The goal of this assignment is to gain a better understand of proportions and the anatomy of the human face in hopes to better your ability to draw the human figure from observation.

Materials:
Explore any materials you feel would benefit your understanding of the human face. (dry and wet media are both welcomed)

Requirements:
Explore different time constraints, sizes and subject matter (do NOT only draw yourself and your friends) try going to a coffee shop and draw the person across the room. Explore both contour and value but not limiting yourself by having to use both in 1 drawing.  Finally, have fun.

Methods:
You must have 5 drawings a week meaning between Monday and Sunday you must have 5 completed drawings to document. Sign and date each one to show progress, this will be turned into a brief slide show.

Tips:
This projected is designed to benefit you. Do NOT wait until the night before to draw 25 portraits, it will be obvious and not be helping you in any way. If done correctly, you will be a far better portrait artist than you were before you started.

Due Date:
Thursday, May 3rd. This will be a full critique day.

Cam's Independent Drawing Project Assignment

Independent Drawing Project

Project Description:
Create a drawing utilizing light to create movement, space, or suggest time.

Goals:
To understand how to manipulate light or light sources in order to enhance a drawing.

Materials:
Any

Requirements:
Light must be used in a fairly non-traditional way. Try not to simply make a drawing with one dramatic light source. Think about how your drawing and light could interact directly.

Methods:
Anything is fair game (some examples:)
Use overlapping colored lights on subject when drawing
Make a drawing almost completely “absent” of light
Display a drawing in almost total darkness or under an overpowering light source.

Tips:
Try to use light in a non traditional way:
This could be having multiple dramatic light sources
Including actual light as part of the drawing.
Etc.
Think about our perception of light and how we traditionally project that onto a drawing.

Independent drawing project
Project description:
Create a series of clothing designs based on one object or animal.  Use the human figure to make 3 or more designs.
Goals:
Learn how colours, patterns and shape come together to create a composition on the human body.
Materials:
All media is open, but keep in mind that colour is important so some mediums will not be suitable.
Requirements:
At least 3 designs on the human body. You can choose between a realistic proportions or more of a model like figure.  Use different standing poses for each model.  If the design has a details not seen from a front view, create more views.
Tips:
Be creative.  Use historical information when thinking about style. Colour and patterns can have a large impact.  Remember that they should be completely different designs, not just the same template but with minor adjustments.  The models do not have to be of the same gender, create designs for different genders if you want.

Goals:
To create a whimsical drawing , work to understand and create real and unreal  proportions

Materials : Ink and mixed medium  must be constant between all three drawings

Requirements : morphed drawing should be on a large scale- although the morphed drawing is an imagined  object it should seem realistic

Tips: be imaginative

Independent drawing

Independent drawing project:

Project description: Use designs or patterns that we come across on a daily basis to create an interesting and detailed composition. ex: antique door designs etc...

Goals: Work very detailed and precise through the study of different designs.

Materials: Any materials can work. Try to use a medium that would express your design best. I would suggest watercolor, pen etc...

Requirements: Very detailed and clean. A border is optional. The project cannot be concentrate on a single design and don't need to fit on one piece of paper. The different detailed designs need to form an interesting composition.
